Kwun Lung Mini Theater: Bringing Hand-Drawn Artworks to New Life with 3D Animation

Engaged by CEU, a student from the Hong Kong Institute of Information Technology (HKIIT) collaborated with the Hong Kong Housing Society (Housing Society) Caring Engaging Smart - Kwun Lung Lau to produce a 3D animation series promoting environmental education. The premiere event was successfully held in mid-December 2025, where schools and local residents came together to see the student’s creative work.

In May 2025, Housing Society Caring Engaging Smart – Kwun Lung Lau organised a mascot design competition. It collected ideas from the community and selected two mascots that represent green living. Subsequently, CEU coordinated with an HKIIT student studying Higher Diploma in Games and Animation. The student applied his VPET skills to transform the winning 2D hand-drawn artworks into lively 3D cartoon characters named “Little Kwun (小觀)” and “Little Lung(小龍)” and created the “Kwun Lung Mini Theater (觀龍小劇場)” animation series. This series focuses on the themes of Waste Separation and Clean Recycling, delivering practical eco-friendly knowledge to the community.

HKIIT student LIN Junxiang, who created the animation, said seeing his work premiered at Kwun Lung Lau was a very touching moment for him. He hopes it can inspire the residents, especially children, to take part in recycling and care more for the environment we share.

The animation premiered at the award ceremony held in mid-December 2026. Representatives from the Housing Society, CEU and HKIIT attended, as well as principals and teachers from Western District schools, with over 60 award winners and their families. Everyone was there to witness the hand-drawn artworks come alive on screen. The audience praised how relatable and vivid brought to life the videos were.

The organiser presented certificates of appreciation to CEU representative, HKIIT representative and the HKIIT student. Awards were also given in different categories, including the Walking Reward Programme, Slogan Design Competition, Most Supportive School Award and Sost Active Participation School Award, to recognise Kwun Lung Lau residents and students for their great involvement and efforts over the past year.
